Title: Lecture Series on Mathematical Thought and Method 2 (Mathematics Research from the Viewpoint of Algebra)

Reporter: XU Xiaoping (Research Fellow)

Time: March 21, 2019 (Thursday) PM 14:00-15:30

Location: A1001# room (Hua Luogeng Laboratory), Innovation Park Building

Abstract: From the point of view of application, algebra is to study the symmetry of the material world. Its object of study is equality and algebraic structure. This report talks about mathematical research from the viewpoint of algebraists: 1. The gap between China's mathematical research and international level; 2. Mathematical research begins with good appreciation of mathematics; 3. Research briefs of some famous mathematicians; 4. My research examples and experience.

The brief introduction to the reporter: Xu Xiaoping is a researcher and doctoral supervisor of the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1992, he received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University in the United States. He was taught by James Lepowsky and Robert Wilson, internationally renowned Lie algebraists. From 1992 to 2002, he taught at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and since 2002, he has been recruited as a researcher in the Institute of Mathematics, Academy of Mathematics and Systems Sciences. Many substantial achievements have been made in the structure and representation of vertex operator algebra, Hamiltonian operator algebra, Lie algebra and representation, and the solution of physical equations by using symmetry and algebraic techniques.
