In recent years, the ubiquitous echo chamber effects and the increasing social polarization in modern media environment, especially on large-scale social networks, has aroused great concern in several different fields. While the impact of interpersonal social interactions on group polarization has been widely studied, few works examine the “top-down” influence flow from external powerful voices such as organized political campaigns or large media conglomerates. In this talk, I’ll introduce an agent-based model that incorporates external political campaigns on social influence processes and show how their combination can lead to the formation of echo chambers. We find that the range of political viewpoints that individuals are willing to consider (open-mindedness) is a key determinant in the formation of polarized networks and show that aggressive political campaigns can have counterproductive outcomes by radicalizing supporters and alienating moderates. We also introduce a dynamic empirical case, retweet networks from the final stage of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, to show how our proposed model can be calibrated with real-world behavior. Results indicate that the most effective ideological position under the existence of echo chamber effects is not necessarily at the median, contrary to the findings of the classic median voter theorem. Finally, the ideas worthy of further considerations will be briefly discussed.

王鑫,北航人工智能研究院助理教授。2015年获北京航空航天大学数学与应用数学专业学士学位,2021年获北京航空航天大学数学博士学位,师从郑志明院士。2018-2020年于美国达特茅斯学院联合培养。主要研究方向为复杂网络系统、大数据精准智能、博弈论与隐私计算等。已在Physical Review X、Proceedings of the Royal Society A、Physical Review E、Chaos Solitons&Fractals等国际知名期刊发表SCI论文十余篇。研究成果曾获PRX Highlights Paper、EPL 2019 Highlights Paper,被美国科学院院刊亮点工作推荐栏目PNAS Journal Club、 美国物理协会APS、美国科学促进会AAAS、物理学家网Phys.org等多家国际主流科技媒体专题报道,并成为达特茅斯数学系官网首页新闻,产生重要国际影响。受邀为欧洲物理快报撰写Perspective,担任Nature Human Behavior,Physical Review Letters, PLOS Computational Biology, Chaos等多个国际一流学术期刊审稿人,担任Frontiers in Applied Mathematics and Statistics客座编辑。参与国家自然科学基金专项项目“社会大数据跨尺度系统学习理论与应用”、科技部科技创新2030-“新一代人工智能”重大项目、工信部重大项目“*核心技术研究”、国家自然科学基金面上项目“数据驱动的信息传播动力学原理与阈值分析研究”等多项国家、省部级重大项目研究。曾获北航博士生十佳、北航十佳学术论文奖、北京市优秀毕业生、北航优秀博士学位论文、北航金质奖章等荣誉。
