报告摘要：We will explain what the list of Smale's problems is and what the 17th is about. Then we will describe the advances which led to its solution.

报告人简介：Felipe Cucker，香港城市大学数学系荣誉教授，欧洲科学院院士、巴塞罗那皇家科学与艺术院院士。Cucker教授的研究兴趣非常广泛，从实代数几何、电脑科学、复杂性到学习理论、群集模型。他在包括Annals of Mathematics在内的顶尖数学杂志上发表论文100余篇。他解决了菲尔兹奖获得者Steve Smale提出的“21世纪18个数学问题”中的第17个问题，合作撰写了复杂性领域的经典著作《Complexity and real computation》（其他三位作者为：Lenore Blum, Michael Shub, Steve Smale）。他是Society for the Foundations of Computational Mathematics的主要发起人之一，现任（或曾任）Foundations of Computational Mathematics、Journal of Complexity、SIAM Journal on Optimization、 Theoretical Computer Science等期刊编委。
