Abstract: We briefly review the development of surgical theory, and then discuss its utility in constructing new geometric objects. In particular, using surgical theory, we can study whether Submanifolds (and their superstructures) can be replaced by "similar" manifolds (or structures). Replaceability can be used to construct new structures on manifolds, while irreplaceability reveals the relative rigidity of manifold pairs.
